The National Weather Station in Tafuna says American Samoa is now in its winter season and for the most part, everyone should expect cooler temperatures.

Local meteorologist Carol Maafala-Bacqui said yesterday that the hurricane season has passed and now that we are in the winter season, there will be a lot of hazardous surf activity, meaning an increase in the issuance of surf advisories and warnings, especially around the south facing shores.

She said trade wind weather conditions during this time of year will include morning showers and some scattered afternoon showers, which are a result of clouds moving in from the east-to-west direction.

Also, expect overnight lows to be warm, in the lower 80s.

“But if there is a trough near the Samoan Island group, the temperatures should drop to mid to upper 70s,” Maafala-Bacqui explained. “The rainfall will also start to decline, as this is our dry season.”

The local meteorologist said rainfall for the region will diminish throughout July and well into August.
