Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Gov. Lolo Matalasi Moliga was joined on Monday this week by other ASG officials and the Board of Higher Education — which governs the American Samoa Community College (ASCC) — during a groundbreaking ceremony for a new building, for the community college.

In his remarks, the governor said this project is funded with American Samoa’s share of $35 million under the federal CARES Act.

He noted at least two other buildings — near the proposed new structure — at the college, needed upgrades and instructed Public Works director Faleosina Voigt, for DPW engineers to conduct an assessment of the two buildings.

For the new proposed building, Voigt said it’s a two-story structure, with the first floor to have vendor spaces, cafeteria, and bathrooms for teachers and staff, while the second floor will have four offices and restrooms for students.

Eight bids were received for the project, with the lowest at $760,000 and highest $1.4 million, while the engineer’s cost is $1.1 million. The contract — at $1.03 million — is awarded to H&H Inc., and the company is given 10 months to complete the project.

Voigt said H&H is the current contractor for the gymnasium at the Peter Coleman Elementary School in Pago Pago and the company had just completed the extension of the Tafuna Elementary School gym project.
