Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — In proclaiming Apr. 16th, today, for the celebration of 2021 Flag Day Gov. Lemanu Peleti Palepoi Sialega Mauga is calling on the government and the people of American Samoa to participate wholeheartedly in this year’s celebration.

The proclamation, dated Apr. 14th, recalls the history of the islands ceded to the United States and becoming a U.S. territory and that the people of American Samoa and the United States, have adhered faithfully to the purposes and obligations of the agreements of cession.

Lemanu then paid tribute to those who are serving on the frontline during the COVID-19 pandemic, saying that, “while we recognize all our emergency first responders, nurses, doctors, administrators and healthcare workers on the frontline combatting this pandemic, it is your ability to serve selflessly and have sacrificed your lives that has kept American Samoa safe during this unprecedented time”.

This Flag Day, “we honor your service by adopting a theme that encompasses the attributes of unselfish service to our people, “Triangle of Service: Country, Church, Government”,” according to the proclamation.

The scaled down Flag Day ceremony opens this morning at the Malaeoletalu in Fagatogo with prayers, speeches and the flag raising.
