Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Local high schools that are fielding a softball team for school year 2018-2019 recently received a generous donation of equipment from the Athletic Mercado Softball Organization in Temecula, CA.

The local recipients include Leone HS, Tafuna HS, Samoana HS, Nuuuli Vo-Tech HS, Fa'asao HS, and Manumalo Academy.

The haul was delivered last week thanks to Tony Feist and Island Cargo Support, and included gloves, balls, bats, helmets, and bags.

Manumalo softball coach Tiana Trepanier was able to secure the donation following discussions with Faasao alumnus Gertrude Uiagalelei-Faapito, whose daughter Matalasi is a New Mexico State University softball commit and a star pitcher at Great Oak HS in Temecula; and niece Selina Taamilo is a winning softball pitcher who was a star at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Selina and Matalasi conducted a one-day free softball clinic last month at the Tony Sola'ita Baseball Field in Tafuna, attended by over 40 girls from local private and public high schools.

"We are immensely grateful for all of the assistance we have received (donated equipment, free shipping, and volunteer softball clinic) and would like to assure you all that your generous donation is making a difference!" said Trepanier. "All equipment has been divided and passed out to all high schools that are fielding a softball team for the 2018-2019 school year."
