Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA  — The Diocese of Samoa-Pago Pago on October 12, 2026, successfully mobilized the entire local Catholic community for a comprehensive, island-wide cleanup initiative in partnership with American Samoa Government stakeholders such as the American Samoa Power Authority (ASPA), American Samoa Department of Commerce (ASDOC). and the American Samoa Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA).

In a demonstration of civic and spiritual unity, parishioners and volunteers from all 18 parishes across American Samoa dedicated their Columbus Day holiday morning to removing litter, beautifying public spaces, and restoring coastal areas.

This coordinated effort served as the diocese's local observance of the global St. Francis of Assisi Jubilee, aligning the community with Catholic faithful worldwide to honor the patron saint of ecology through proactive environmental stewardship.

The large-scale operation was made possible through interagency partnership with government stakeholders such as ASPA, ASDOC, and ASEPA.

Parishioners fundamentally reinforced an islandwide commitment to waste reduction and continuous care for their shared home, proving that collective spiritual action can lead to practical change.

The cleanup collected approximately 9,810 lbs of municipal solid waste that were on the coastline, roadside, and streams across the coverage areas.

Expressing the gratitude on behalf of ASPA and ASDOC for the community's profound impact, AS- EPA Director Edna Asalele Noga commended the diocese for its leadership and dedication to the territory's environment.

‘We extend our sincere appreciation to his Lordship Bishop Kolio Etuale and the Diocese of Samoa Pago Pago for translating the spirit of this historic jubilee into meaningful action," stated Director Noga. "Environmental stewardship is a shared responsibility and the exceptional turnout across the island territory not only honors the legacy of St. Francis but also inspires our community to become responsible stewards of the environment to which we can advance our collective mission to protect and preserve our natural resources for future generations."
