Samoa court hands schoolgirl rapist two and a half years

A 19 year-old man who pleaded guilty to a dozen counts of sexual intercourse with a young girl, has been sent to prison for two and a half years. The victim was 12 years old at the time of the offending and she attends primary school. The decision was handed down by Justice Lesatele Rapi Va’ai in the Supreme Court last week.Despite an apology from the defendant’s parents, Justice Va’ai decided not to take this into consideration when sentencing saying that an apology could never make up for the actions committed as he had previous convictions.A suppression order from the court prevents the publication of the defendant’s and the victim’s names.Information released in court told that he instructed the defendant to lay on the ground before raping her.The first incident occurred when the victim’s mother was in town and she was home alone.A further aggravating factor against the defendant was that the offending had taken place in the home where the victim was entitled to feel safe and secure and to be brought up in a loving environment.
