Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — In a directive yesterday to all ASG directors, Gov. Lolo Matalasi Moliga declared that today, Friday, Sept. 13th is “Island Wide Costal Clean Up” for all ASG departments and agencies. He is also inviting businesses, religious and village communities, to partner with ASG.

“Together we can successfully mobilize the ASG workforce, private sector, and villages to stop the flow of trash before it has a chance to reach the water to choke and entangle marine life, endanger sea turtles, or ruin our beaches and depress our local economy,” he said.

“As part of this important event,” Lolo said all of ASG will be expected to clean up the coastal shoreline, streams, or watershed as part of today’s workday. And the clean-up starts from 8a.m. to 12noon.

He said essential services will be exempted from this directive and directors will be responsible for efficient coordination of staff and resources to implement this clean-up effort to avoid duplication.

Staff of the Commerce Department’s American Samoa Coastal Management Program will assist in coordinating efforts to ensure that the harbor shoreline, as well as streams, is cleaned.

“This is the time for the people of American Samoa to take and become good stewards of the resources granted to us for our enjoyment and preserving the same for future generations,” he concluded.
