Port Administration completes lighting upgrades at Port of Pago Pago
Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Floodlighting on the Port of Pago Pago is now fully operational, according to an announcement released from the Port Administration of American Samoa (PAAS). proudly This infrastructure enhancement enables safer operations during low visibility days and the resumption of full nighttime vessel operations, significantly boosting the territory's logistical efficiency, maritime security, and supply chain resilience.
Following the successful activation of the floodlights, the Chief of Customs confirmed that full nighttime vessel operations would soon resume. This milestone addresses long-standing operational bottlenecks and enhances the port's capacity to process incoming goods safely and efficiently.
ADDRESSING OPERATION AND SAFETY
The restoration of nighttime operational capabilities directly addresses several core priorities for the port and the territory:
• Operational Timeline: The lighting system restoration marks a major turning point after over 7 years where nighttime visibility was significantly impaired, constraining after-hours vessel handling.
• Safety and Risk Mitigation: Enhanced illumination drastically reduces operational risks during night cargo handling, protecting port workers, equipment operators, and incoming vessels.
• Security and Cargo Tracking: Improved visibility across the terminal strengthens surveillance, improves regulatory compliance, and enhances tracking for incoming goods.
• Strategic Investment: The lighting upgrades form an integral part of ongoing modernization efforts at the Port of Pago Pago, supporting broader infrastructure development and economic stability.
• Funding and Contracts: The project was made possible through grant funding provided by the Maritime Administration (MARAD), the Department of the Interior (DOI), and the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). Young Electric Solutions specified and supplied the new floodlights, and Westland Construction performed the installation and commissioning.
BROADER SEAPORT MODERNIZATION INITIATIVES
The lighting project aligns with the Port Administration American Samoa (PAAS)'s overarching Seaport Vision initiatives. As a vital regional transshipment hub and the exclusive commercial seaport for American Samoa, the Port of Pago Pago handles 95% of the territory's imported goods, fuel, medical supplies, and food, alongside vital support for the local tuna canning industry and regional maritime commerce.
Director of Port Administration Barney Sene emphasized the significance of the upgrade, noting that enhanced night operations reinforce the territory's economic lifeline and ensure uninterrupted flow of essential goods for local families and businesses. PAAS extends its sincere thanks to all port users, tenants, and partners for their patience and cooperation both during the extended period prior to the upgrades and during the installation phase. *
