Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — This National Weather Service Pago Pago photo shows an example of coastal flooding reported along east, south, and west facing shores.

“Although king tides ended yesterday (Wednesday)  around 1 PM, large southerly swells continues to impact our shores.:

The Weather Service says to expect seas to gradually subside by Friday, though advisory thresholds will remain through the new week.

Reports are also being received that there is also flooding on the new Ofu airport runway.

A High Surf Warning remains in effect as surfs of 15 feet and greater have been observed this evening and will continue to impact coastal waters for the remainder of the week.

WHAT TO EXPECT WITH A HIGH SURF WARNING

Impact level: HIGH... Expect ocean water sweeping across beaches, very strong breaking waves, strong longshore and potentially deadly rip currents. Significant coastal erosion is also likely. Large waves may bring ocean debris onto roadways and will impact small harbors, making navigating the harbor channel dangerous.

PRECAUTIONARY AND PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS

Large, breaking surf, significant shore break, coastal erosion, and dangerous currents will make entering the water very hazardous.
Anyone entering the water could face significant injury or death.
