American Samoa Catholics mark Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem

The start of the procession of worshiper from the Holy Family Parish in Fatuoaiga

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The start of the procession of worshipers — several of them carrying palm branches —  at the Holy Family Parish in Fatuoaiga, on Palm Sunday, Apr. 14th, followed by a combined Mass at the Holy Family Cathedral.

Before the procession, a special prayer service was held in front of the Saint Joseph Community Malae, followed by the blessing of palms. A spiritual message of remembering the importance of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem was delivered by Catholic leaders.

Similar processions were held at other Catholic parishes across the territory.

Palm Sunday starts Holy Week for Catholics and includes Way of the Cross processions around the world to commemorate the Passion, or suffering, of Jesus on Good Friday, and his death by crucifixion.

Way of the Cross processions at various Catholic churches in the territory start around 5a.m. Friday.

Easter Sunday marks Jesus' resurrection.
