Washington, DC – Over the past week, Congresswoman Aumua Amata has been pleased to welcome dignitaries to American Samoa’s congressional office for briefings, updates and discussions of the Pacific region.

New Zealand's Ambassador to the United States Rosemary Banks visited American Samoa’s congressional office recently for a discussion of the Pacific region at the start of the 116th Congress.

“It was a pleasure to welcome the Ambassador on behalf of my constituents in American Samoa,” said Aumua Amata. “Both of us represent such beautiful places in the Pacific! I appreciate Ambassador Banks’ experience and insight from her extensive service representing her country to the United Nations, France, Portugal and more. Our nations share a lasting friendship and many of the same priorities.”

Also, during the past week, the Interior Department’s leaders took time to brief Congressman Amata following the shutdown’s limited services. Assistant Secretary for Insular and International Affairs Doug Domenech and Office of Insular Affairs Director Nikolao Pula visited American Samoa’s congressional office to discuss services to insular areas.

“I’m so appreciative of this visit and update from Assistant Secretary Domenech and Director Pula,” said Congresswoman Amata. “The Assistant Secretary has been a friend to our islands, and of course, it’s good to have one of our own in the Insular Affairs office in Director Pula.”

“President Trump has nominated Acting Secretary David Bernhardt for Senate confirmation to continue leading the Interior Department,” concluded Rep. Amata. “I appreciate the Interior Department’s leadership throughout the Trump Administration being willing to visit and see American Samoa firsthand, and I know the President’s nominee will benefit from these accumulated insights about our Territory.”
