AS Boys and Girls Little League Baseball Summer Program opens with 300 participants

The American Samoa Boys and Girls Little League Baseball Summer Program opened last Saturday at the Tony Solaita Baseball Field with some 300 eager young players signed up to participate this summer, according to Victor Langkilde, the president of the American Samoa Baseball Association (ASBA) and Little League Program (LLP).

This year’s LLP is the first summer sports program to officially begin in American Samoa and is once again in partnership with the Department of Parks and Recreation with sponsorship from local businesses.

Langkilde would like to thank all of those who showed up on Saturday to show their support of the Little League and its athletes, and all of those who helped make the opening day a successful one. The summer program comprises the registered participants and team clubs within the ASBA.

The teams for this year’s program are the Fatu-O-Aiga Angels, Central Cubs, Nu’uuli Meto Giants, Mapusaga Fou Rockies, Tafuna Pirates and the Leone A’s. The divisions are the Coach Pitch for 6-8 year olds, Minor League for 9-11 year olds and the Major League for 12-14 year olds.

The Coach Pitch Division does not keep score, but allows every player from each team to participate for the enjoyment of the game, while learning how to play at the same time. On Saturday’s opening day, the Coach Pitch Division had the Fatu-O-Aiga Angels and the Central Cubs take the field first to the delight of the crowd that filled the stands at Solaita Field.

In the Minor League Division on Saturday, the Tafuna Pirates and the Fatu-O-Aiga Angels played to a draw with both teams scoring 2 points apiece. The other Minor League games saw the Leone A’s down the Central Cubs by a score of 12-1; the Mapusaga Fou Rockies of the Major League Division shut out the Leone A’s 9-0, while the Central Cubs walked away with a victory over the Fatu-O-Aiga Angels by a score of 12-4, to end the Opening Day.
