ASHSAA Girls volleyball has two undefeated teams

The American Samoa High School Athletic Association (ASHSAA) Girls varsity volleyball season is heading into its second week of play today. Last week saw the defending varsity champion Tafuna Warriors lose both of their games to start the season off slow out of the gates.

They were downed by the Faga’itua Vikings in the season opener last Monday, then they went on to be defeated by the Nu’uuli Voctech Wildcats last Friday in two hard fought sets in Tafuna; 26-28 and 25-27. The Wildcats, finished the regular season just behind the Warriors and Vikings and will be looking to better their performance this year.

The Samoana Sharks, who played their first game of the season against the Kanana Fou Stallions, started off the same way they finished last season, on the losing end of the deal. The Sharks were downed by the Stallions in two sets; 25-10 and 25-21. The Sharks who finished last season in last place with only one win, have nothing to lose this season and any win at all will be an improvement compared to their performance last year.

The next match up to start the second week of play, will be today as the Stallions will be making a trip to the Warriors. With the Stallions finishing the first week of play in the win column and building momentum for themselves, they just might have a shot at defeating the defending champion Warriors who struggled through their first two games last week that ended in losses.

Tomorrow’s games will have the Sharks making a trip to Faga’itua to play the Vikings. With the way the Vikings took care of business last week when they started the season off in a fast sprint, they will most likely be going into this game with more than enough confidence against the Sharks. Tomorrow will also will have the Wildcats playing the Fa’asao Marist Cougars at the Malaeloa gymnasium.

The Warriors will be hosting the Sharks on Thursday, as the Leone Lions will be making a long trip to the East side to take on the Vikings. To finish out the second week of play on Friday, the Wildcats will face-off against the Stallions in Kanana Fou, while the Lions and Warriors will meet each other in Tafuna. All of these games have a scheduled starting time of 4:30 p.m.
