Govt unaware of a Samoan woman who reportedly dumped baby in Malaysia

Apia, SAMOA — Local government officials have no knowledge of a Samoan woman reported to have given birth in a rest room and dumped her new born baby in a trash bin in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The story was reported by the Sun Daily online media in Kuala Lumpur dated Tuesday 3 September.

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Prime Minister’s Office, Valavala Siapo Pese told Talamua that they have not been informed of such an incident.

“As far as I know we have not been informed of such. Normally, if we do not have an Ambassador present in a country, they will inform us if there is anything.….so we should know but no, we do not know about it,” said Valavala.

The Sun Daily online news report said “a Samoan woman was detained by police on suspicion of dumping a newborn baby into a trash bin in a restroom on the National Monument grounds, here yesterday.”

Dang Wangi District police Chief ACP Mohd Fahmi Visunathan Abdullah said police were informed of the discovery of a dead baby by the public around 11am.

“An inspection found that the baby still had its umbilical cord and was wrapped in a shawl inside the bin,” he said.

The Sun Daily report said following the discovery, a Samoan woman aged 33 was detained at a private clinic in Setia Alam around 2pm.

The woman is reported to have arrived in Malaysia the day before to attend a health course and she and her friends were brought for a tour around the city.

Samoa’s Director General of Health, Leausa Dr. Toleafoa Take Naseri told Talamua that he has not been informed of anything about the reported incident.
