Plans move forward for Int’l Day of the Girl

Moana Purcell, event coordinator for the upcoming International Day of the Girl celebrations and co-chair for Women and Sports Commission under the American Samoa National Olympic Committee (ASNOC), speaks during a meeting this past Wednesday for all event partners, held at the ASNOC conference room in Tafuna.

The territory will, for the first time, celebrate International Day of the Girl beginning October 20 and culminating October 25 with an agenda aimed at celebrating life through health and sports.

International Day of the Girl will be carried out through partnerships with local sports federations, various ethnic community groups, government departments and agencies, church organizations, and local residents.

On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 to declare October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child, to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.

October 11 is not just a day— it’s a movement. A worldwide revolution.

Anyone interested in joining the ‘movement’ can call the ASNOC office at 699-8855 or contact Moana Purcell directly at 258-8998.
