Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Recovery of the Samoa Airways aircraft involved in a runway inciden at Fitiuta Airport could take at least two to three months, according to a report published by the Samoa Observer.

Samoa Airways and the Port Administration of American Samoa (PAAS) are coordinating a complex salvage operation following last week's incident.

According to the report, Port Administration, Samoa Airways Chief Executive Officer Fauo'o Fatu Tielu is finalizing a recovery strategy with Unity Aviation of Canada, which is preparing to deploy a specialized two- to three-person rescue team.

The aircraft will first be moved from dense bush to a safe area on the airport apron, where engineers will carry out a structural assessment before determining how it can be returned to Apia. PAAS Engineering Manager Natalia Palamo will oversee the relocation.

Samoa Airways is required to submit a recovery plan detailing the proposed timeline, equipment to be used and crane load specifications before the aircraft can be moved.

The incident occurred on July 28 at Fitiuta Airport in the Manu'a Islands. No fatalities or major injuries were reported.
