Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — On June 5, 2026, the Fagatogo Police Station (FPS) received a report from a school administrator claiming a parent was allegedly causing a disturbance at the school.

The suspect allegedly overturned tables, attempted to strike the school principal, and threatened to return with a firearm after learning that his daughter had placed third in her class.

The suspect was later arrested and charged with:

Count 1: Public Peace Disturbance, a class B misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for up to six months, a fine not to exceed $500, or both fine and imprisonment; and,

Count 2: Assault in the Third Degree, a class C misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for up to fifteen days, a fine of not more than $300, or both.

The defendant was held without bail.

According to the court affidavit, police received the call shortly before noon from the principal of a local elementary school, reporting the incident and that the situation appeared to be escalating.

Several police officers responded arriving approximately one hour later. Upon arrival, officers met with the principal and several staff members who had witnessed the incident inside the school's gymnasium, where students, teachers, parents, and family members had gathered for an end-of-year graduation ceremony with celebration-related activities.

The principal told officers that the suspect became upset after learning that his daughter did not place first in her class. According to her statement, the suspect approached her during the event and questioned her about the academic rankings.

When informed that his daughter had finished third, he allegedly became enraged. She explained that the suspect began shouting profanities and acting aggressively towards school personnel.

Witnesses reported that he overturned tables, causing food, drinks, and other items to scatter across the floor in front of students and guests attending the event. The principal further alleged that the suspect attempted to punch or strike her during the confrontation.

School staff members who witnessed the incident stated that the suspect raised his hand in a manner that suggested he was about to slap the principal before others intervened.

According to the principal, the suspect also made statements indicating that he would return to the school with a firearm.

The principal told investigators that she immediately became concerned for the safety of everyone on campus, especially the children attending the event. She explained that her fear increased because she believed the suspect was capable of carrying out the threat.

According to witness statements, the disturbance continued even after the suspect began leaving the school grounds. Witnesses reported that the suspect loudly shouted profanities and performed what was described as a war cry while walking away from the gymnasium area.

Investigators noted that the incident occurred in the school gymnasium filled with students and family members, many of whom witnessed the confrontation, and caused alarm among staff members.

Witnesses further reported that after leaving the gymnasium, the suspect entered his vehicle and drove away from the school grounds at a high rate of speed. One witness stated that children were riding in the back of the truck at the time, raising additional concerns for safety.

After gathering statements from school officials and witnesses, officers obtained information regarding the suspect's residence and went to his home.

Upon arrival, officers observed the suspect standing outside the residence. According to police reports, when officers attempted to approach him and discuss the incident, the suspect became confrontational and repeatedly warned officers not to step onto his property.

Moreover, the suspect insisted that he had merely exercised his constitutional right to free speech and repeatedly told officers that he "said what he said." Despite his initial resistance, he eventually agreed to accompany officers to the station for questioning.

At the police station, the suspect was Mirandized. He initially indicated that he wished to provide a written statement, but later declined to do so.

During a verbal interview with investigators, the suspect admitted that he had been angry during the incident. He explained that his daughter had spent considerable time representing the school in various academic and extracurricular activities throughout the year, including island-wide competitions and school projects.

According to the suspect, he felt that his daughter's dedication and sacrifices had not been properly recognized. He told investigators that he believed she deserved a higher ranking and was upset when he learned she had placed third.

Police reports indicate that the suspect acknowledged becoming emotional, but did not provide a written account of the incident.

Following the investigation, officers placed the suspect under arrest and booked him pending his initial appearance in District Court.

Court documents further stated that while awaiting transportation to the Tafuna Correctional Facility, the suspect informed a police supervisor that he had consumed alcohol while barbecuing prior to arriving at the school event.

The defendant is identified as a 39-year-old U.S National.

The affidavit was filed in the District Court on June 08, 2026.

As with all criminal cases, the allegations outlined in court filings remain accusations at this stage, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
