Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — As of Monday, July 6, 2026, no arrests had been made in connection with a tragic traffic accident that resulted in the death of a man who was involved in a car crash while traveling with escaped inmates.

This incident has garnered significant attention due to the serious implications surrounding both the accident itself and the circumstances of the inmates' escape.

Acting Commissioner Falana’ipupu Taase Sagapolutele provided an update on the ongoing investigations during a recent press briefing.

He confirmed with Samoa News that law enforcement divisions are conducting two separate inquiries: one by the Traffic Division, which is meticulously examining the details and circumstances surrounding the fatal accident, and another by the Criminal Investigations Division, which is focused specifically on the escape of the inmates involved in the incident.

At this point, authorities have not disclosed the name or age of the man who tragically lost his life in the accident.

The Acting Commissioner stated that the case is currently being treated as a homicide by vehicle, a classification that carries serious legal ramifications related to the actions leading to the man's death. He said investigators are looking closely at the conduct of those involved, including the driver and the escaped inmates, during the events leading up to the crash. Reports indicate that the victim was one of two individuals positioned in the rear of a truck that was actively being pursued by police.

The front cabin of the vehicle contained the driver and three additional men, all of whom have been confirmed as escaped inmates.

According to allegations, the truck had picked up these four inmates from the Tafuna Correctional Facility (TCF) and was initially heading toward the eastern side of the island. However, during the pursuit, the vehicle made an unexpected turn headed west.

This prompted law enforcement to initiate a high-speed chase, which ended in a tragic conclusion in the Taputimu area when the truck crashed violently into a coconut tree, causing significant damage and resulting in the loss of life. In addition to the unfortunate fatality, reports from the police indicate that one of the inmates in the vehicle sustained only minor injuries in the collision.

Fortunately, the driver of the truck, as well as the other three inmates, managed to survive the accident without physical harm.

Acting Commissioner Falana’i opted not to address allegations suggesting that police officers may have discharged their weapons at the vehicle during the high-speed pursuit.

He explained that, due to the ongoing investigations, he could not provide further comments until all facts have been thoroughly examined and the investigation is concluded.

This incident continues to raise questions about the protocols followed during police pursuits and about public safety.
