Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — A woman was taken to the LBJ Medical Hospital last Sunday afternoon after a vehicle ran off the road at a curve in Lauli’i.

Other photos of the incident showed EMS crews in the water with the driver strapped to a board as they were bringing him to shore in waist deep water — it was shared by bystanders on Facebook.

An eyewitness who was at the scene when first responders arrived told Samoa News that there were two people inside the vehicle. The witness said the vehicle landed on rocks as the tide was coming in and the vehicle was submerged in water with the two occupants still inside by the time the EMS crew arrived.

Both of them were taken to the hospital where the woman was admitted with a leg injury while the man was treated and released on the same night.

The eyewitness said it’s believed that speeding in wet conditions was a factor in the accident. DPS is investigating the cause of the accident.
