Dept. of Education kicks off 2026 sports program
Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Last Friday morning joy and enthusiasm filled the American Samoa Department of Education main office in Utulei as leaders, educators, and families gathered to celebrate the official opening of the 2026 academic sports year. Acting Governor Pulumataala Ae Ae Jr. joined the government leaders, Department of Education leadership, high school administrators, coaches, community partners, parents, and student athletes.
Principal Leo'o Dr. Patrick Danielson served as master of ceremonies, welcoming all guests and introducing Stake President Lotoa Lotoa Jr., who offered opening words of encouragement and led the invocation to set a positive tone for the event. In his special remarks, Acting Governor Pulumataala expressed immense gratitude for the continuation of student sports programs. Recalling a visit to Afono Elementary School's new gymnasium, where he noticed a lack of sports equipment and later returned to donate essential items, he reaffirmed his dedication to finding resources and funding for ASDOE athletics. He urged student athletes to strive for excellence in both academics and sports, while encouraging them to make healthy choices that support a long and fulfilling life.
ASDOE Director Maefau Dr. Mary Taufete'e expressed her sincere appreciation to all community partners, departments, and sports associations that joined forces with the department. Emphasizing the power of collaboration, she noted that building a strong network of support, much like a house supported by many posts, ensures a brighter future for the territory's youth. The program reached an exciting highlight with the ceremonial first throw. Acting Governor Pulumataala threw the first football to a student athlete of Tafuna High School, followed by Director Taufete'e alongside House representatives and community partners, threw sports balls to student team captains from all of the high schools to officially kick off the season.
Principal Leo'o Dr. Patrick Danielson delivered closing remarks on behalf of the Director and the Department of Education, expressing gratitude to the attendees for their presence in celebrating this significant occasion. Representative Faimealelei Allen took to the podium to offer remarks of appreciation, wishing ASDOE and its student athletes a successful year while pledging ongoing support from the legislature. The memorable gathering concluded with a closing prayer led by Stake President Lotoa Lotoa Jr.
