BREAKING NEWS: Feds sentence Nauer to 2 years

Former supervisor of the school bus division of the local Department of Education, Gustav Nauer was today sentenced at the federal court in Honolulu to serve just over 2 years in prison. Nauer, 46, was also ordered to pay a $100,000 in restitution.

Nauer pled guilty in January 2011 to bribery of federal program funds. As part of the scheme, Nauer and other territorial government officials arranged to order "phantom" bus parts that were never received by the government, as well as bus parts at inflated prices, from a local vendor, said prosecutors.

In exchange for the guilty plea, Nauer admitted that he and other government officials were paid approximately $300,000 in bribes from January 2003 until October 2006.

A brief statement filed in February this year by prosecutors says the “precise” amount of payment the defendant received in the scheme was $292,569.99.
