Biz Beat: “Here’s to Your Health!”

A landmark book first published in 1965 by Henry G. Bieler, M.D. had a title which made history—if only because it flew in the face of conventional wisdom at the time. He called it “Food Is Your Best Medicine”. The book went on to become an international best seller many times over, and is considered a pioneering classic in the field of nutrition.

The title was taken from an ancient source: none other than Hippocrates, who said for the ages, “Let they food be thy medicine.” Even the ancients knew there were healing properties in the natural world, things good for body and soul grew in the earth and the seas, blossomed in the trees and on the vines.

Over the years since Dr. Bieler’s book was written, dramatic evidence has come to light in research around the world that Dr. Bieler was on the right track—that optimum health comes in large part by the foods we choose to eat. When we add a wholesome, nutritious diet— loaded with fresh fruits and vegetables— to sunshine, fresh air and exercise, we go a long way toward feeling strong, healthy and robust even into old age.

In other words—the body you have tomorrow equals what you put into it today.

Fast forward to the present day, where American Samoa leads the Pacific in NCDs. These are “non-communicable diseases” which are also termed ‘lifestyle’ diseases.

Debilitating, life-threatening problems associated with diabetes, heart disease and cancer come about because of unhealthy habits, particularly when it comes to food choices.

And that is exactly why Norma Uiagalelei decided to begin a new business. She told Samoa News, “When I heard about the NCD reports in the paper and on the news and how it has affected our people, I just knew I had to do something to help.” She went on to say that she’s been interested in nutrition and natural healing all her life. “I love reading about it, and how a fresh, healthy and all natural diet relates to our bodies!”

A Samoan girl born and raised in New Zealand, she said eating healthy was a natural part of growing up and she wanted to give that benefit to others.

That’s how “Herbn’ Juice” was born.

Tucked away in a little corner behind the Laufou Shopping Center, it is one of the best-kept secrets in Tutuila— which is not so secret any more. Norma already has a loyal following of customers who keep coming back for the delicious—and unusual—concoctions she has put together for the menu in one of the Territory’s wonderful new eateries.

A cozy place, with floor to ceiling windows and vintage photos of the island along the walls, she boasts two large, colorful menus—one for smoothies, featuring the best local and off-island fruits; and one for juices with amazing vegetable blends.

And the color isn’t just for the menus—she features things such as “Papaya Detox”, “Oatmeal Blends”, “Antioxidant” smoothies and “Super Green” smoothies. You can even order shots: Kale Shots and Ginger Shots are two favorites, along with numerous freshly squeezed “Super Green” juices like Green Ginger Ale and Junko Juice.

In every way, she strives for the freshest local produce. She noted that “it’s challenging here, because supplies are not consistent.” With a side note familiar to everyone who shops for fresh produce in the Territory she said,” The local stores all run out of supplies at the same time! ...But I’m familiar with the schedules now, which makes it easier.”

Her customers report that “they feel differently now, they don’t have the food cravings, or eat heavy food all the time. They just feel better!” said the owner/manager and chief juicer, who is also the mother of four healthy children.

“These vegetable cocktails contain healthy micronutrients, very few calories and no dietary fat. Our internal body systems thrive on juices, resulting in optimal health and vitality. Since the sugar percentage and calorie count in vegetables is much lower than fruits, juicing stabilizes blood sugar levels,” according to Carolyn Hansen, in her publication “Juicing: An integral Part of Cancer Prevention.”

Norma also serves some of the best sandwiches in the Pacific, using full-bodied, whole grain bread, loaded with seeds, nuts and other delicious multi grain ingredients. Try one of her toasted ham, cheese and pineapple sandwiches, or a Tuna Deluxe on multi-grain bread for a real treat.

Fresh fruit salads, iced coffee and herbal teas like fresh ginger tea and lemongrass tea round out the menu for Herbn’ Juice which is open every day except Sunday.

Herbn’ Juice has now extended its operating hours for Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7am - 8pm— in case you’re looking for a healthier meal after a workout!

Tuesdays and Thursdays hours are from 7am to 5pm and Saturdays 8am to 2pm. “Here’s to Your Health!” is the motto chosen by Norma Uiagalelei for Herbn’ Juice—and she means it!
