National Public Works Week celebrated

Gov. Pulaali'i Nikolao Pula, has officially proclaimed May 18– 24, 2025, as National Public Works Week in the Territory of American Samoa. The week -long celebration began with a special church service held on Sunday at the Aua Congregational Christian Church of American Samoa (CCCAS), recognizing the week of appreciation and recognition for the vital work of the Department of Public Works (DPW).

The service was attended by religious leaders, government officials, members of the Fono, and the men and women of the Public Works Department, according to a media release from ASG.

Governor Pulaali'i offered a keynote address during the service honoring the department’s unwavering commitment to building and maintaining the territory’s infrastructure.

“The Department of Public Works is the backbone of progress in our territory,” he stated. “They ensure our roads are passable, our buildings are safe, and our environment is protected. They are often unseen, but never unimportant.”

The Governor further highlighted this year's national theme: “People, Purpose, and Presence.”

●    People symbolize the committed professionals who serve with integrity and compassion.

●    Purpose represents the mission that drives them to build and sustain the foundation of American Samoa’s future.

●    Presence reflects the quiet but powerful role Public Works plays in ensuring safety, access, and opportunity for all.

The Governor, joined by Lt. Governor Pulumataala Ae Ae, Jr., emphasized that while much has been accomplished, there remains much to be done. Both leaders reiterated their continued support for the department in fulfilling its mission of service to the island home.

Also delivering remarks during the service was Reverend Viliamu Leilua, who encouraged DPW employees to remain steadfast in their calling.

“You are serving your people and your God, ” he said, urging them to rely on faith in all circumstances.

Director of Public Works, Taeaotui Punaofo Tilei, expressed deep appreciation to the Governor and Lt. Governor for their leadership and support. “Their vision for American Samoa inspires our department to press forward in delivering essential services and infrastructure improvements across the territory.”

The celebration of National Public Works Week continued with a Wave on Monday, May 19 and an Island Cleanup and Department Field Day on Tuesday.

On Thursday, May 22, a Banquet and Fiafia Night is scheduled and on Friday, May 23rd – a Division Celebration Day is planned.
