Man from Samoa pleads guilty to assaulting his Uncle — here in American Samoa

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — A man from Samoa accused of assaulting his 59-year-old uncle with a shovel and damaging his uncle’s vehicle has entered into a plea agreement with the government.

Alex Unasa, 26, was initially charged with 2nd degree assault and 1st degree property damage, both class D felonies, along with a class A misdemeanor charge of 3rd degree assault.

However, under a plea agreement with the government, Unasa pled guilty to the charge of 2nd degree assault.

With his guilty plea, Unasa admits that on Oct. 24, 2018 in Malaeimi, American Samoa, he assaulted his uncle by striking his head with a shovel multiple times, causing severe injury to his uncle’s head and his facial area. He also admits that on the same date, he damage his uncle’s vehicle by striking the windshield and the driver’s door with a machete.

As a condition of the signed agreement between the parties, the government is recommending a probation of 5 years, with the condition that the defendant depart the territory immediately.

Unasa, who has been in custody since his arrest last year, unable to post his $10,000 surety bond, is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 20, 2019 for sentencing
