Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — A man who was arrested for disturbing the public peace is now facing drug charges.

Sefo Fa’amanatu, 28, appeared in court this week. He is charged with unlawful possession of methamphetamine, a felony; and 2 misdemeanors: public peace disturbance and trespass.

Bond is set at $5,000.

If he is able to post bond, Faamanatu is to remain law abiding, not leave or attempt to leave the island, and he is not to make any direct or indirect contact with the government’s witnesses, including the victim and her family.

The charges stem from an incident whereby police received a call from a man, claiming that he knows the man who tried to enter their home through the back door.

According to the caller, he was at his neighbor’s house when he heard their dogs barking. When he came to check, he noticed that the back door of the house was open.

As he walked towards the area, his eye caught some movement in a dark section near the house; and when he  turned to check, he saw a man hiding in the shadows. He said he called out to the person who replied, “none of your business,” before he ran to the other side of the house and on to the main road.

The man told police it was clear that the person was “Jeff” a.k.a. Sefo Fa’amanatu, who was apprehended by police 2 hours later in front of a store, where he was drinking with some friends.

During a body search, police discovered a glass pipe containing a crystalline substance which later tested positive as meth.

Faamanatu told police that he went to the family’s home so he could talk to his girlfriend.

A preliminary hearing is set for tomorrow.
