Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Jacob McBride during his second tattoo session while family members remain close to him to give him the spiritual strength and courage needed during the session, as it is considered disgraceful behavior to complain or cry from the pain. Singing and words of encouragement are welcomed during the tattooing sessions to help the apisa (area or house where the tattoo giving is done) atmosphere be one of calm and focus.

One of the group is seen holding McBride’s feet to stop him from moving around too much as it could damage the tattoo. Usually there are helpers, which include not only family but possible apprentice tattooists, assisting the tufuga — to mix the lama, to wipe away the blood, to dip the ‘comb’ into the lama, to receive the comb that has been used, another to clean it, and yet another to hold the skin tight during the application.

During this session, three are seen assisting Tufuga Su'a Alaivaa Tikeli Loli while he applies the ink, the lama, by tapping a traditional instrument/ comb to outline and fill in the tatau design on McBride’s skin.
