Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Mrs. Melesete Haleck, who passed away Tuesday. Mrs. Haleck reportedly showed up at her job as office manager at the Governor’s Office on Tuesday morning and then fell ill later. She was taken to the hospital where she passed away.

“Mele” as she was called by friends and family, has worked in the Governor’s Office since the first administration of Gov. A.P. Lutali in the late 1980s and remained there as the incoming Lemanu Administration took the helm of government on Jan. 3, 2021.

Many friends, family members, co-workers in government and others who came in contact with “Mele” spoke fondly of her on social media postings since Tuesday night when word spread of her passing.

Even those living in the US posted messages of condolences on social media.

Mele — whose husband, Lauvao Steve Haleck passed away several years ago — has been described by many as friendly, outgoing and the go-to-person, if you needed something from the Governor’s Office over the years.

Samoa News expresses our condolences to Mele’s children and family for their loss.
