Half of women in Samoa report violence
Apia, SAMOA — Over 51 per cent of women in Samoa aged 15-49 years old reported experiencing physical violence perpetrated by their husbands or someone else since the age of 15.
This is according to the Samoa Demographic and Health Survey-Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey 2019-2020. The statistics were quoted in a manual produced by the Samoa Family Health Association (S.F.H.A.) which is the Standard Operating Procedure for Sexual and Gender-based Violence Services. The manual produced by the non-government organisation was published on 10 August 2023.
The figures indicate that the prevalence rate of sexual and gender-based violence remains very high in Samoa.
According to the association's manual, one in three married women of the same age group reported experiencing physical, sexual and emotional violence committed by an intimate partner
Two in five women aged between 15-49 years have experienced physical violence committed by non-partners since the age of 15 and 16 per cent of them experienced it in the last 12 months.
