Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Aumua Amata released the following message for this Memorial Day:

“Memorial Day is one of our country’s most important holidays. Our freedom has always depended on generations of military heroes willing to serve and sacrifice. Memorial Day is the one day we focus on those who gave all for us. They live on in our thoughts and our nation’s history.

“Our islands have built a remarkable tradition of military service. It is especially fitting to remember the start of that legacy in the 1800’s with our own Navy Seaman Tafaega of Olosega Island, Manu’a, who fought in two wars for the United States, the Spanish-American and World War I.

“Let us keep our many service members and their families in our prayers for safety.

“Memorial Day weekend has become a special time with friends and family, and though we’re not traveling and gathering as much as most years, have a wonderful time with those closest to you.

“God bless the memories of the fallen, our service members, American Samoa, and America.”
