Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — On February 13, 2026, a man identified as Sylvest Peverita was arrested and charged following a domestic disturbance that escalated into property damage at a residence in Pava’ia’i.
The defendant was later charged with:
Count 1: Private Peace Disturbance, a class C misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for up to fifteen days, a fine not to exceed $300, or both imprisonment and fine;
Count 2: Property Damage in the Third Degree (DV), a class B misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for up to six months, a fine not to exceed $500, or both; and,
Count 3: Resisting Arrest, a class A misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for up to one year, a fine not more than $1,000, or both.
The defendant was held without bail.
According to the affidavit, filed in the District Court on Feb. 18, 2026, the incident was reported to authorities at approximately 3:24 p.m., when a concerned mother contacted police to report that her adult son was behaving aggressively inside their home.
She told officers that the suspect was yelling loudly, shouting profanities in Samoan, and had begun damaging property, including striking the rear door of the house with a hammer.
Officers were dispatched to the scene and upon arrival, they made contact with the reporter outside the home. Officers conducted an initial interview to gather details about the situation and assess any immediate threats. The mother appeared visibly shaken as she explained the events leading up to the disturbance.
After providing her statement and personal information, she granted officers permission to enter the residence and make contact with the suspect.
According to police, officers approached the front entrance and entered the home cautiously. Inside, they observed the suspect lying on a couch, appearing calm and scrolling through his mobile phone.
Officers noted that the suspect is hearing impaired, which required them to adjust their approach in attempting to communicate with him.
Initially, officers attempted to gain the suspect’s attention through visual signals and gestures, indicating for him to step outside the residence. Despite these efforts, the suspect reportedly shook his head, turned away from the officers, and refused to comply with their instructions.
Due to the suspect’s noncompliance, one officer approached and attempted to escort him off the couch by holding his arm. At that point, the situation escalated when the suspect began resisting. Police stated that the suspect pulled away and appeared to prepare to strike the officer with his free arm.
Additional officers immediately intervened to prevent the situation from escalating further. Working together, they restrained both of the suspect’s arms while he continued to resist. After a brief struggle inside the residence, officers were able to gain control and place the suspect in handcuffs. No serious injuries were reported during the encounter.
The suspect was escorted out of the home and placed into a waiting patrol unit without further incident.
During the investigation, the mother provided additional details regarding the events that led up to the disturbance. She told officers that her son had asked her for money so he could go to Futiga to play pool. When she refused his request, he became agitated and began yelling profanities. His behavior quickly escalated, culminating in him striking the rear door of the home with a hammer, causing visible damage.
The mother also informed officers that this was not an isolated incident. She stated that her son has a history of reacting aggressively when his demands are not met. According to her statement, he has previously broken household items, yelled loudly, and used abusive language during similar outbursts.
She expressed deep concern for her safety and the safety of her husband, emphasizing that they are the only three individuals living in the household. She indicated that the repeated nature of these incidents has created an ongoing sense of fear and instability within the home.
Police further noted that the situation is particularly concerning due to the physical vulnerabilities of the couple. The husband is completely blind, while the mother suffers from severe vision impairment. She explained to officers that as her eyesight continues to deteriorate, she fears she may soon be unable to manage her son’s behavior or respond effectively during future incidents. She also expressed concern that his temper could escalate further, potentially leading to serious harm.
Officers inspected the damage to the residence and confirmed that the rear door had sustained significant impact, including a visible hole consistent with being struck by a hammer.
Following the completion of interviews and the on-scene investigation, the defendant, Sylvest Peverita was formally arrested.
He was transported to the Tafuna Correctional Facility, where he was booked and detained pending his initial appearance in District Court.
The defendant is identified as a 28-year-old citizen of Samoa.
