PBS Newshour crew examines fate of local longline fleet

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — This Samoa News photo on Oct. 30, shows boat owners of the locally based US longline fleet being interviewed by the TV news crew of PBS Newshour weekend program, based out of New York City.

The crew of three — including one based in Los Angeles — was en route to the Rose Atoll last week, but spent a few days on Tutuila island, looking at the local fishing industry and its contribution to the local economy.

They interviewed ‘alia owners, representatives from longliners, the cannery, Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources, and Island Fisheries, the company that operates the Fagatogo Fish Market. Facing the camera, Carlos Sanchez, a co-owner of several US- American Samoa based longliners is seen with the PBS TV crew.

The crew returned to the US this past Monday night. No official word yet on when the stories on fishery and the Rose Atoll will be aired nationwide.
