Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — American Samoa is making progress with Le Vasa submarine cable system, as part of the Pacific Connect initiative, with new survey work now underway.

On Saturday, April 25, survey teams from SubCom conducted initial shoreline and near- shore assessments. The work included Beach Manhole inspections and underwater surveys to review the proposed cable landing area and help determine how the cable will come ashore.

The vessel arrived in American Samoa on Monday, April 27, 2026. Offshore survey operations between the Branching Unit and the landing site are scheduled from April 30 through May 5. These surveys will help determine the undersea route for safely placing the cable on the ocean floor.

This phase, many years in the making, is an important step toward expanding internet capacity, speed, and reliability across the Territory.

American Samoa also welcomed key project partners, including representatives from AP Telecom, who are supporting the project’s funding and development efforts.

An Ava Ceremony was held the morning of Tuesday, April 28, 2026 to formally welcome the delegation.

“The arrival of Subcom and the vessel is an important step towards progress with the Le Vasa cable system”, said Governor Pulaali‘i N. Pula. “This is a testament to the coordination and commitment of ASTCA, Google, Subcom, AP Telecom, and everyone involved. I extend my appreciation to all involved in moving this project forward”

ASTCA CEO Fola Sorepa F. Thomas, whose agency is serving as the lead government authority overseeing the project and implementation, said “This is where years of planning begin turning into visible progress,” Fola said. “We are now mapping the exact path that will strengthen American Samoa’s connection to the world. ASTCA has helped drive this project forward, and it is rewarding to see that vision taking shape.”
