Winners at the 37th annual American Samoa Island Wide Science Fair

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Science/Health Division of Office of Curriculum and Instruction, American Samoa Department of Education announced the winners at the thirty seventh annual American Samoa Island Wide Science Fair —STEAM related competition for all students of American Samoa. The Science Fair, a special project adopted and coordinated to inspire young scientists, engineers and innovators who will solve the grand challenges of the future.

The top five winners from high school division and the first place overall winner from 6-8 grade cluster are now eligible to represent American Samoa to the Regeneron ISEF 2020 will be held in Anaheim, California from May 10 to 15, 2020. The Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (Regeneron ISEF), a program of Society for Science & the Public, is the world’s largest international pre-college science competition.

Each year, approximately 1,800 high school students from more than 75 countries, regions, and territories are awarded the opportunity to showcase their independent research and compete for on average $4 million in prizes.

The American Samoa Science Fair was held on Feb. 10-14 at the Rex Lee Auditorium, Utulei. More than 350 students from K-12 grade levels from all schools were participated in this week-long STEAM activity. 

In recognition of their achievements, all the winners received a prize package containing certificate of merit; Trophy; a bag with school supplies and T shirts and gift vouchers.  

On approval, the top five winners from high school division and the first place overall winner from 6-8 grade cluster are will receive an all-expense paid trip to Anaheim, California from May 10 to 15, 2020 to showcase their science projects at the International Science and Engineering Fair.

This special project is coordinated by the Office of Curriculum and Instruction and sponsored by the Department of Education. Many special thanks to all the parents and supporters in attendance to witness the presentations by these ‘young scientists’ of American Samoa.
