Honoring Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga's life and his legacy of service
Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Flags of the United States and American Samoa are now being flown at half-staff as the territory mourns the passing of former Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga, and recognizes his lifetime of dedicated service to the people of American Samoa. He passed away in Honolulu early Friday morning, at Kuakini Medical Center, on March 06, 2026 after being hospitalized for several days. He was 78 years old.
Friends, family, and colleagues are now sharing memories of his generosity, vision, and the profound impact he had on the community he cherished.
During the Senate session last Friday, a moment of silence was observed in honor of Lolo’s life and legacy.
A son of Ta'ü in the Manu'a Islands, Governor Lolo began his education at Papatea Junior Elementary School before advancing to Manu'a High School. He pursued higher education, earning a bachelor's degree in education from Chadron State College in Nebraska. He later furthered his studies by obtaining a master's degree in public administration from San Diego State University, equipping him with the knowledge and skills necessary for a career in public service.
He began his career as a teacher and school principal and later served as an elementary and secondary education administrator within the American Samoa Department of Education, director of the American Samoa Government Budget Office, American Samoa's chief procurement officer, and president of the Development Bank of American Samoa, consistently working to improve opportunities for our young people and to strengthen the Territory's economic foundation.
Outside his public office duties, Lolo was also an entrepreneur, owning and operating a successful construction firm that contributed to the local economy.
Throughout his life, Governor Lolo remained deeply committed to the preservation of the fa'a Samoa and the advancement of our people. His leadership, wisdom, and dedication to the Territory reflected his profound love for American Samoa and its future.
Lolo's political career was marked by service in the American Samoa House of Representatives, where he was elected for four consecutive terms. His leadership abilities were further recognized when he transitioned to the American Samoa Senate, where he served as Senate president from 2005 to 2008. He was also appointed president of the Development Bank of American Samoa. In 2012, Lolo was elected as Governor of American Samoa, a role in which he served a full eight-year term.
Alongside his public service, he was also a deacon in his church.

“To the Family of the Honorable Lolo Letalu Matalasi Moliga and the People of American Samoa Talofa lava, it is with the deepest sorrow that I, on behalf of the American Samoa Government and the people of our Territory, extend our heartfelt condolences on the passing of our former Governor, the Honorable Lolo Letalu Matalasi Moliga. We mourn together the loss of a devoted leader, husband, father, grandfather, matai, educator, and public servant who dedicated his life in service to our people.
“Governor Moliga's journey from the classrooms and school offices to the highest office in the Territory is a story of humility, faith, and unwavering commitment to the fa' a Samoa. As a teacher, principal, legislator, and later as Governor, he worked tirelessly to uplift our communities, strengthen education, and preserve the resources of our islands with care and responsibility. His calm, steady leadership guided American Samoa through times of challenge and change, always with the well-being of our people at heart. In this time of grief, we give thanks for his many years of service and for the legacy he leaves behind in the institutions he helped build and the many lives he touched. May his example of integrity, service, and faith inspire future generations of leaders in American Samoa.
“To the Moliga family, please know that the prayers of our entire Territory are with you. We ask our gracious God to surround you with comfort and peace, and to grant you strength in the days ahead. May you find solace in cherished memories of his love, guidance, and wisdom and in the knowledge that his contribution to our islands will never be forgotten. In honor of his life and service, the American Samoa Government will join the family and the community in paying fitting tribute to Governor Moliga. Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata also released a statement honoring the life and public service of Governor Lolo Letalu Matalasi Moliga.
“I am saddened by the passing of Governor Lolo Letalu Matalasi Moliga. He was a strong and decisive leader. Even more importantly, he was a man of faith.
“I worked with Governor Lolo often in his eight years leading our territory, and I always had great respect for him, and for the will of our people who twice elected him Governor. He was an educator, a businessman, and a longtime dedicated leader among our people, including several key leadership roles before serving as Governor. He has a secure place in American Samoa’s history.
“My deepest condolences to his dear widow Cynthia Moliga, their daughters, grandsons and the entire family and close friends, and to all the people of American Samoa. We mourn his passing, but remember his life, and we are comforted by our knowledge of his faith. May God bless and be near in this time, as he rests in honored peace.
Lolo is survived by his wife, Cynthia Malala, and their children, Va'a Matalasi, Eteuati Sola, Muaiao, Lealofisa, and two grandsons.
