Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — As of October 23rd, there have been 303 confirmed cases of Dengue Fever reported in American Samoa, reflecting an increase from the previous count of 288 cases. The American Samoa Department of Health has confirmed an additional 15 cases. A total of 297 patients have successfully recovered from the illness, while six patients are currently receiving treatment at the LBJ Hospital. Fortunately, officials report no critical cases at this time.

Health teams are working tirelessly around the clock to implement measures to control the spread of Dengue Fever and protect the community. However, they cannot achieve success without the community’s cooperation and support.

The Department reminds the public of several necessary actions to take to safeguard your family and community:

Make it a priority to pick up and properly dispose of trash in and around your homes and villages. Mosquitoes breed in standing water, so eliminating debris is crucial. Regularly check and empty containers, buckets, tires, and any items that can collect rainwater or other forms of standing water. This reduces mosquito breeding sites significantly. Apply mosquito repellent that contains DEET when going outdoors, especially during the early morning and late afternoon hours when mosquitoes are most active.

Wear long sleeves and long pants to minimize skin exposure, providing an added layer of protection against mosquito bites. Ensure that window and door screens are intact and reinforced, preventing mosquitoes from entering your living spaces.

The Department of Health is optimistic that together, we can effectively combat the spread of Dengue Fever and protect our community's health.

Furthermore, the Department urges the public to remain vigilant.

“If you begin to notice concerning symptoms, such as a high fever exceeding 101°F, intense headaches that do not respond to over-the-counter pain relievers, joint and muscle pain that hampers your daily activities, or any unusual rashes that appear suddenly or spread rapidly, seeking medical attention without delay is essential.

“We strongly recommend visiting a nearby community health center, where a team of qualified healthcare professionals can conduct a comprehensive evaluation. “Proactive medical intervention is important not only for your health but also for the safety of those around you, as early diagnosis can help prevent the spread of infectious diseases.”
