Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Through a June 30th memorandum, Gov. Lemanu Peleti Palepoi Sialega Mauga declared that the Fourth of July, Independence Day, which falls on a Sunday this year is being observed as a holiday in American Samoa, today Monday, July 5th.

Therefore all government offices are closed and normal activities suspended. All ASG employees who are required to work on Monday will be paid holiday wages, in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

“Independence Day is a time to commemorate our Nation’s birth. I encourage you all to take time this weekend to reflect on the many freedoms and liberties we share, but also price of those freedoms,” the governor said on behalf of Lt. Gov. Talauega and their families.

“On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence, asserting self-governance for the thirteen American colonies — severing ties from Great Britain.  The Declaration of Independence is a significant landmark in the history of our democracy and prevails as a universal symbol of liberty.

“As we celebrate 245 years of independence and the birth of the United States of America, let us remember that freedom is never free and that our independence is secured through the sacrifice of the brave men and women who continue to fight to preserve the liberties we enjoy.  May we always be grateful for the incredible freedom we are blessed with.  Let us aspire to uphold the principals on which this gret nation was build — life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

Under local law, if holiday falls on a Sunday, it’s observed the next day, a Monday.

Besides ASG, others in the private sector will also be closed on Monday, including the two financial institutions as well as StarKist Samoa.

In observance of the holiday, Samoa News will not publish on Monday and the office will be closed.

Have a safe and happy Fourth of July weekend, especially to all Toa o Samoa in the territory and around the world.

GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILIES ON THIS FOURTH OF JULY

Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata sent out a holiday greeting wishing everyone a happy 4th. “It has been a rough year because of the problems created by COVID, but we can still celebrate our freedom and our country with the people we love,” she said.

“A special thank you to all the men and women serving in the military, wherever you happen to be right now, and your families for the sacrifice they make. American Samoa’s strong connection to our Armed Forces makes this patriotic holiday that much more important in our community.”

I hope everyone enjoys this special weekend, Amata wrote.
