Final tally for voter rolls: 16,300+ eligible to cast a ballot Nov 3

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Just over 16,300 electors are on the voter’s roller for the Nov. 3rd general election after voter registration closed at 4:30p.m on Monday this week, says Chief Election Officer Dr. Lealofi Uiagalelei.

This year, electors cast ballots in the gubernatorial, congressional and local House of Representatives races, with Election Office urging those who have registered to vote on Election Day.

Samoa News received reports that many people who showed up on Monday to register to vote, including two first-time voters, who said that they had just “dragged” their feet until the last minute when their parents reminded them to register to vote.

“During the closing of registration on Oct. 5th, we worked till 12 midnight trying to get every registration input into our voter registration system,” Uiagalelei said yesterday responding to Samoa News inquiries.

“There were a lot who showed up during the closing — approximately 230 new voters registered on Oct. 5th,” said Uiagalelei who said that total number of registered voters stands at 16,343 and he urged all those who registered to also please vote on Election Day, Nov. 3rd because “it’s your right.”

Additionally, there will be no more new voter registration allowed including transfering, name changes and re-registering.

Uiagalelei said the official list of registered voters is now available to candidates running for public office to pick up at the Election Office in Tafuna.

Election officials will be going out to villages to conduct local absentee voting to voters with disabilities tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 9th.  Number of local absentees stands at 88.

Anybody with a disability can contact the election office at 699-3570  to request for a local absentee vote. Election information is on the Election Office website (www.aselectionoffice.gov), which also provides details on overseas absentee ballots.
