FEMA approves $67,000+ in COVID funeral assistance so far for the territory
Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — As of last month, the U.S Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved more than $67,000 in COVID-19 related funeral costs for “applicants” from American Samoa, according to the federal agency’s public online records.
American Samoa’s COVID-19 related death count remains at 34 for the past several weeks since the first death was reported in March this year.
According to FEMA public online records — as of early last month — there were 31 applications from American Samoa and a total of $67,550.52 approved, with 13 awards made so far.
Eligibility determinations are based on when the applicant submits all required documentation. The determinations are not driven by state/locations, said FEMA. And “applications” — as reflected in the data released by FEMA — reflects the number of individuals who called FEMA to begin the assistance process.
Under the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021 and the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, FEMA provides financial assistance for COVID-19 related funeral expenses incurred after January 20, 2020.
