Both nurses and teachers honored this week
Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — This week, we honor and appreciate the invaluable contributions of teachers and nurses to our community. Teachers play a crucial role in shaping the minds and futures of our children. They inspire students to learn, think critically, and develop the skills necessary for success in life. Their dedication and passion for education are fundamental in nurturing informed and engaged citizens who will help drive our society forward.
Governor Pulaaliʻi Nikolao Pula and Lieutenant Governor Pulu Ae Ae Jr., along with the American Samoa Government, extend their deepest gratitude to every teacher across the territory. Their commitment goes far beyond the classroom.
The government leaders emphasize that teachers shape minds, nurture character, and carry forward the values, language, and culture that define who we are as a people. With every lesson taught, every word of encouragement given, and every sacrifice made, they are building the future of American Samoa. Teachers are mentors, role models, and guardians of knowledge, guiding our youth to become strong, capable, and proud leaders of tomorrow.
The governor recognizes the challenges teachers face, and the government honors the resilience, patience, and passion they bring to their calling each day. The impact of teachers is lasting, and often their work goes unnoticed.
Director of Education Maefau Dr. Mary Taufeteʻe acknowledges teachers' unwavering dedication and hard work during Teacher Appreciation Week. Their passion for teaching and commitment to our students' growth profoundly impact the lives of those they teach. Thank you for inspiring and shaping the future through your knowledge and kindness.
May God continue to bless your efforts and the important work you do each day. Thank you for being remarkable and inspiring educators as you mentor and prepare tomorrow's leaders. As we celebrate this week, let us express our gratitude for these vital professions that work tirelessly to improve our lives and communities.
In addition to recognizing teachers, we are also celebrating the nursing profession, which is essential for addressing our medical needs and ensuring the health and well-being of individuals and families. National Nurses Week will be observed from May 3 to May 9, 2026.
The week began with the annual Nurses Week Church Service, held Sunday at CCCAS Vailoa and hosted by the American Samoa Nurses Association. This event brought together government leaders, community members, families, and, most importantly, the nurses of American Samoa.
This year’s theme, “The Power of Nurses,” honors the strength, compassion, and unwavering dedication that define nursing across the territory. Nurses provide compassionate care, advocate for patients, and often serve as the first point of contact in the healthcare system. Their expertise and commitment make a profound difference in the lives of those they serve.
Acting Governor Pulumataala, Senate President Tuaolo Fruean, and House Speaker Savali Talavou Ale joined the congregation in honoring the service and hard work of our wonderful nurses, with Reverend Alama Solofa leading the service. Toaga Seumalo, President of the American Samoa Nurses Association, opened the program with welcoming remarks, expressing gratitude for the unity and support shown by community leaders and members.
In his keynote address, Pulumataala acknowledged the extraordinary service nurses provide to the people of American Samoa. He encouraged nurses to continue their essential work and reaffirmed the government's commitment to collaborating to strengthen healthcare across the territory. Reverend Solofa followed with a powerful sermon focused on nurture, service, and the spiritual calling of caregiving, emphasizing the profound impact nurses have on the community's well-being.
Over the weekend, the American Samoa Government issued a proclamation to honor the hard work of nurses in the territory. The Acting Governor emphasized that this recognition comes with deep appreciation for the unmatched impact nurses have had during the pandemic and for their contributions to healthcare services throughout American Samoa.
According to the proclamation, registered nurses in the United States, along with approximately 190 licensed nurses in American Samoa, make up the nation’s largest healthcare profession. The nursing profession addresses the diverse and emerging healthcare needs of the population of American Samoa across various settings.
The American Samoa Nurses Association serves as the voice for all nurses in the territory and is working to chart a new course toward a healthier nation that emphasizes increased access to primary and preventive healthcare services.
Professional nursing is a critical component in ensuring the safety of hospitalized and non-hospitalized patients and the quality of care they receive.
The demand for licensed nursing services is expected to rise significantly due to the aging population, emerging health challenges, the continuous expansion of life-sustaining technologies, and the rapid growth of home healthcare.
