Boil Water Notice lifted for the Pavaiai Public Water System

Source: AS-EPA media release

Pavaiai, AMERICAN SAMOA —  After years of hard work by the American Samoa Power Authority (ASPA) to resolve the issue of E. coli contaminated water in various districts, the American Samoa Environmental Protection Agency (AS-EPA) recently approved the lifting of the Boil Water Notice (BWN) for the Pavaiai public water system.

The Pavaiai system serves customers from the Iliili/Futiga intersection going northeast to the Manulele Elementary School road in Nuuuli and this includes the area from Pavaiai to Aoloau/Aasu.

Over the last several years, ASPA has worked diligently to remove the standing BWN for the Pavaiai public water system. They modified two of the system’s six wells (#67 and #85) to meet adequate chlorine contact time and removed one of the wells (#89) from service. Well #89 will now be used as a monitoring well only.

With funding from the United States EPA, ASPA drilled three new wells, which currently connect to the Pavaiai water system. Following stringent monitoring required by AS-EPA, recent test results confirm that the Pavaiai public water system is in compliance with the American Samoa Safe Drinking Water Standards.

Based on these test results, AS-EPA has officially lifted the standing BWN for the Pavaiai public water system. The current lifting of the BWN is only for Pavaiai public water system and the areas indicated above; the BWN remains in effect for all other BWN specified areas.

AS-EPA Director, Ameko Pato, congratulates ASPA for the hard work, dedication and commitment through the years to eliminate more areas from the BWN.  Director Pato stated that the protection of our underground drinking water is an island-wide effort.  Therefore, he seeks the public’s help in securing the safety of water supplies in the Territory.

Everyone’s assistance is needed to ensure that on-site wastewater disposal systems (cesspools and septic tanks) do not contribute to the contamination of our drinking water.  If you suspect that your on-site wastewater disposal system may be damaged, please call ASPA at 699-1234 or AS-EPA at 633-2304 for an inspection.  If you encounter leaks from waterlines in the ASPA system, please report it to ASPA.
