ASPA reports on water projects totaling over $9 Million funded by US-EPA
Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — A total of $9.1million of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US-EPA) funded projects carried out by the American Samoa Power Authority (ASPA) were completed in fiscal year 2021 to improve the quality of water services in the territory.
Whereas $2 million was utilized by ASPA for new meters to provide “more accurate and provide real time data at one-hour intervals for a more accurate billing” FY 2021.
This is outlined in the ASPA’s Audit report for the 2021 fiscal year.
The report says another US-EPA funded project in the amount of $1.25 million improved water pressure and distribution in the Central District Water System.
A new well connection, which cost $1.07 million assisted in improving the system water pressure in the area of Mesepa and Faleniu to the ASCC compound. Another well replaced in the Easter District amounted to $1.3 million.
A project developed during the last fiscal year addressed water loss in Pava’ia’i, according to the report.
“The project significantly reduces water loss and operating cost in the Pavaia’i water system. The project was funded in the amount of $1,919,300 and is substantially completed.”
For Ili’ili, ASPA worked on improving water pressure and distribution in the Central District Water System.
“The project was US-EPA funded in the amount of $250,000 and is substantially completed. The new well improves water pressure and distribution in the Central District Water System.”
In addition, US-EPA also funded the water supply and pressure project in the village of Vaipito on the east side. This project cost $170,000 and is substantially completed.
The Audit report also noted a total of $928,044 was allocated for a project in Vailoa to improve water pressure and reduces water loss in the Village.
