Already a world wide sporting power, the game of rugby is on the rise in the United States with 30-percent of all U.S. squads hailing from right here in Hawaii. This weekend, the sport’s biggest event to ever take place in Hawaii will be witnessed as the Samoa Independence Day Rugby Festival will be held at Aloha Stadium on Saturday. The day long celebration will feature matches from the keiki level to the main-draw featuring Toa Samoa and the U.S. Tomahawks. Both teams enter the match as World Ranked Top 10, and both are heading to the Rugby League World Cup in England/Wales this October. This will be the second match in the Ohana Series. Last year U.S.A. played powerhouse Tonga to a 28-20 loss, a close one considering Tonga had 9 professionals, while U.S.A. had 9 rookies to the International game. The special part of this U.S.A. vs. Samoa match-up is that several former U.H. Rainbows and Rainbow Warriors are on the USA squad, including Jayson Rego, Joshua Rice, Keiki Misepeka, Kelly McGill and Vai Notoa.
