Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — A Crew from the School Lunch Program is making it possible for students to receive their lunches despite schools being closed during the outbreak of the coronavirus.

At Monday’s cabinet meeting, Education deputy director Fa’auifono Vaitautolu said that the US Department of Agriculture — which funds the program — has granted approval for continued distribution of school lunches during this time of closure of both public and private schools.

Manulele Tausala (pictured) is one of the designated distribution sites for school lunches covering Nu’uuli and nearby villages. For example, a student from Nu’uuli village, who attends Samoana High School picked up her school lunch from this site.

Distribution, which began on Wednesday, is from 8a.m to 12noon and designated distribution sites are centralized to make it easy for students and their parents to pick up the school lunches. ASDOE officials were at the distribution sites on Wednesday.

ASG’s COVID-19 task force chairman Iulogologo Joseph Pereira said the distribution method will be assessed before the end of this week to see if it needs to be improved.
