Health Dept issues warning to businesses selling meat

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The American Samoa Department of Health Environmental Services has issued a stern warning to members of the business community specifically on meat packing and meat cutting.

In a statement posted on their official Facebook Page, the ASDOH says that meatpacking, meat cutting, and meat rewrapping are prohibited unless the following have been obtained, a valid business license, valid health card.

Also these services should be held in an isolated room with requirements including hot water, sink, proper ventilation, etc.

Furthermore a designated room has passed sanitary inspections; a valid health permit.

Also all the meat should be labeled.

“You cannot repack freezer-burnt meat, chicken, or any meat.

“You cannot pack meat that has been thawed out or defrosted at room temperature.

“You cannot wrap or pack frozen meats in the storage room, in the bathroom, or in any other room other than a meat packing room,” says the notice.
