Twenty-one to stand trial in Tahiti meth ring

Tahiti, FRENCH POLYNESIA — A total of 21 people in French Polynesia will have to stand trial for their role in a methamphetamine network which was broken up at the beginning of the year.

This follows an investigation triggered by the arrest at Tahiti airport in January of three women, including a 66-year-old one, carrying more than 200 grams of the banned drug.

According to media reports, the investigators uncovered a network of dealers and users who made more than 20 trips from December 2016 to smuggle the drug from the United States.

The investigation found that rivalries developed among the suspects who tried to cheat on each other.

No date has been set for their trial.

They risk jail terms of up to 10 years.
