Apia, SAMOA — The Samoa Supreme Court has granted bail to Ana Tran Thi, the 24 year old Vietnamese female accused of carrying illegal drugs into the country.

Speaking through an interpreter, Justice Leaitaualesa warned Ana Tran Thi that she will immediately be taken back to prison if she fails to comply with the bail conditions.

Defence Counsel Sarona Ponifasio, who appeared on behalf of Alex Su’a, asked the court for an order to police to release all of the accused’s personal belongings except for travel documents.

Justice Leiataualesa said he will leave the matter to the police and prosecution to look into.

Ana Tran Thi was ordered to surrender all her travel documents, must sign with the police on Tuesdays and Fridays every week at the police station in Apia. She is also to stay at Dircose Motel at Matautu Tai.

She was also ordered to appear in court on 19 August together with her translator. She is expected then to enter her plea to the charges of possession of narcotics and bribery.

Ana Tran Thi was stopped at Faleolo International Airport 21 July carrying tablets that tested positive for illegal drugs with an estimated street value of more than $400,000.

She was traveling from Singapore via Fiji and her final destination was American Samoa.
