Local VFW group holds Memorial Day service

A third Memorial Day service was held earlier this morning (Monday, May 28)  in honor of fallen soldiers of all foreign wars. The “sunrise” and “candlelight service” was organized by the local association of Veterans of Foreign Wars, and was held at the American Samoa Armed Forces Memorial Building at the Tafuna Industrial Park starting at 6a.m.

Lt. Gov. Lemanu Peleti Mauga, a VFW lifetime member and military retiree, was set to be the guest speaker, and VFW Commander Roy Laulusa was scheduled to provide opening remarks for the service to which the public was invited.

Following the lighting of candles for all those in attendance, flower leis were placed on the Monument’s railing, starting with the honoring of fallen soldiers of World War I, followed by Fitafita Guard, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Desert Storm and the Iraq/Afghanistan conflicts. A wreath was placed at the monument followed by the playing of the military taps.

“God bless the families of our fallen comrades and all Veterans of American Samoa, says a brief note on the program.

Also on Monday is the ASG annual Memorial Day service followed around 9a.m. while another service is underway in the Bay Area where wreaths will be laid at sea, just off  the Lauli’i shoreline, followed by a mini church service at the Satala cemetery.  And a reminder, due to Monday being a holiday, all local and federal offices are  closed.
