Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — A group of seven inmates made a daring escape from the Territorial Correctional Facility on Saturday evening, but they returned to the jail just hours later.

According to police officers who requested anonymity due to concerns about potential repercussions, they received urgent communication from the TCF on Saturday evening regarding the escaped inmates. Reports indicate that the inmates managed to climb over the facility's perimeter fence and fled on foot.

The officers expressed serious concerns about the inadequate public notification procedures currently employed by the Department of Corrections in cases of inmate escapes. They underscored that timely and effective public alerts are crucial not only for keeping community members informed about potential dangers but also for mobilizing public assistance to apprehend fugitives swiftly.

Also, such alerts could play a vital role in enhancing public safety by enabling citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity. Furthermore, the officers highlighted the importance of a transparent communication strategy that fosters trust between the corrections system and the community, ultimately contributing to a safer environment for everyone.

In addition, the officers reported that another inmate, Hassan Tupuola, managed to escape from the TCF on Tuesday of last week and remains at large. Despite the seriousness of this situation, no public announcement has been made about his escape, raising significant concerns about the facility's security protocols and the effectiveness of its emergency response.

The lack of information regarding Tupuola's escape exacerbates anxieties within the community, sparking serious concerns about the effectiveness of existing security measures at the facility.

This situation raises critical questions about the protocols intended to prevent such incidents and safeguard both the facility's integrity and the public's well-being. Residents are left wondering not only how such a breach occurred but also what steps will be taken to restore their sense of safety and trust in the system.
