“Pooch” reinstated as ASDOE athletics director
Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Suaese Pooch Taase has been officially reinstated as the Athletics Director for the American Samoa Department of Education (ASDOE), a decision formally confirmed through a letter signed by the Director of Education, Maefau Dr. Mary Taufetee, dated October 6, 2025.
This official correspondence, addressed specifically to Taase ‘Pooch’, serves as the definitive notification of his immediate return to the leadership position.
In her letter, Director Taufetee outlined a clear set of expectations for Taase's reinstated role, stating, “You are expected to resume all duties, responsibilities, and authority associated with the Athletics Director position without delay.
“We anticipate your continued leadership and unwavering commitment to excellence within the ASDOE.”
Before his reinstatement, Taase had been reassigned on September 24, 2025 to serve as a physical education and health instructor at Leone High School. This transition occurred under contentious circumstances, as Taase had previously raised concerns about certain policies initiated by the department.
In his absence, Tulaga Kevin Magalei was appointed to serve as Athletics Director, a position Taase held with notable impact prior to his reassignment. Taase has publicly indicated that his removal from the Athletics Director position was largely due to his vocal opposition to the director's policies and decisions, which he believed were detrimental to the athletic programs within the ASDOE.
With this reinstatement, Taase 'Pooch' is expected to leverage his extensive experience and passion for sports to create a positive environment for student athletes across American Samoa.
This decision comes alongside the reassignment of two teachers who had previously faced removal from their schools due to inappropriate conduct — such as swearing at students — and were transitioned into the Athletics Division.
