Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — A man charged with private peace disturbance after he allegedly damaged the interior of his home with an axe was remanded to the LBJ Behavioral Center yesterday morning, per a request from his attorney, Assistant Public Defender Ryan Anderson.

Tau Maugalei Veavea appeared in District Court pursuant to an arrest warrant. Samoa News understands that Veavea was yelling profanities at his home, and he used an axe to strike an area of the residence.

When his mother intervened, Veavea allegedly continued yelling and turned the axe to his parents, chasing the couple out of the home while his children were still inside.

It was revealed in court yesterday that Veavea has another pending matter.

Judge Fiti Sunia set bail for the new case at $500 and if Veavea is able to cough up the funds, he is ordered to stay away from the victims (his family) and their place of residence. He is also ordered to find somewhere else to stay while his case is pending.

Defense attorney Anderson asked the court to order his client to undergo a mental health evaluation, saying Veavea is currently on medication. Anderson did not elaborate.

Sunia granted the request, and a status hearing for both cases, as well as a preliminary examination for the new case, are all set for January 18.
